Two police guards among six killed in city violence

KARACHI: At least six people, including two police guards, were killed in separate incidents of violence in various parts of the metropolis here on Wednesday.

According to police and rescue sources, two twin brothers were targeted on Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai road when they were on the way to University of Karachi (KU) for BCom examination.

SHO Jan Khan Niazi said that unidentified armed riders sprayed a volley of bullets when the victims, who were identified as Jamal Zafar, son of Abdul Ghafoor and Haider Latif, parked their car (AHD-392) at a tyre shop within the limits of Kalri police station, resultantly, both the brothers sustained bullet wounds. Zafar succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). Doctors admitted Latif at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and termed his condition critical.

He said the victims were the residents of Bihar Colony. He said the eyewitnesses in their statement revealed that the assailants came on CG-125 bike from the same street where the victims resided. Replying to a question, he said it was premature to say the motive behind the attack that whether it was sectarian or personal enmity; however, investigation was underway to ascertain the facts.

He said the father of the victims is a doctor and employed in the Lyari General Hospital. A case 1/13 was registered against unknown attackers.

In another incident, two police guards lost their lives when they offered resistance during a robbery bid near Banaras Bridge within the jurisdiction of Pirabad police station.

SHO Faryad Hussain said the deceased, who were identified as Rizwan and Naeem, were police guards. He said some unidentified armed men intercepted a GPO van for looting purpose.

Meanwhile, those police guards sustained fatal bullet wounds when they offered resistance near Banaras Bridge. No case was registered till filing of this report.

A brother of MQM man, Rameez, 20, son of Mohiuddin, was targeted near Usmania Hotel within the precincts of Jamsheed Quarters police station.

SHO Inayatullah Marwat said Rameez was the brother of an MQM man and might have been killed on the similar ground.

No case was registered till filing of this report.

Another man was gunned down near Habib Bank Chowrangi when he was travelling on a flyover in a car within the jurisdiction of SITE-A police station.

SHO Rao Rafiq said the deceased was identified as Javed Aziz and the motive behind his murder was yet to be ascertained. No case was registered till filing of this report.
