Two cops among 13 killed in Karachi violence

KARACHI: As many as 13 people, including two policemen, were killed in separated acts of violence in the city on Monday.

Three people were killed and three others injured in an armed attack at Haji Allah Buksh Welfare office within the limits of Ahsanabad police station.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Qamar Ahmed said that over half a dozen suspects clad in shalwar kameez came to office on four motorcycles and opened fire. As a result, six men Adnan, Shakir, Waqas, Arif, Zafar and Humayun received fatal bullet wounds.

The motive behind the killing was yet to be ascertained.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police was killed during patrolling in Sherpao Colony within the jurisdiction of Quaidabad police station.

According to police, 39-year-old ASI Zulfiqar Ali was on patrolling on his bike when armed riders shot him dead and fled.

The body was brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for an autopsy. The officer said Zulfiqar was posted at Quaidabad police station as an intelligence officer. He said the victim hailed from Faisalabad. The officer informed that Zulfiqar was investigating the twin blasts that occurred in same area on January 24, 2013, in which two people, including a DSP, were killed and several others injured. He suspected that same culprits might have killed him.

Separately, a policeman was killed near his house in Gulbahar area within the precincts of Gulbahar police station.

An official said Syed Mukhtar, 33, was sitting near his house when armed riders shot him dead and escaped. The body was shifted to ASH.

A cleric of Deoband school of thought was killed near University of Karachi within the precincts of Sachal police station.

According to police, Qari Muhammad Asim, 40, was on his way home when armed riders opened fire on him, resultantly, he died on the spot.

The body was brought to the JPMC for a postmortem. The official said Asim was the resident of the same area and hailed from south Punjab.

Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) spokesman Maulana Saeed Akbar Farooqi said that the deceased was a sympathiser of his organisation.

Moreover, a man affiliated with currency exchange business, was killed and his security guard injured while offering resistance in robbery bid in Qazi Bazar, Mithadar area within the jurisdiction of Kharadar police station.

An official said that the deceased was later identified as 33-year-old trader Imran and the injured security guard as 25-year Shahzad.

The officer said that victim was a money exchanger by profession and was on the way back after collecting cash from one of his clients in a vehicle CR-3974 when at least half a dozen culprits intercepted the vehicle and tried to loot the collected money, however, when they offered resistance, the culprits opened fire on them, and made off with booty worth 0.6 million.

Furthermore, a man was killed and another injured in Garden area within the limits of Garden police station. According to police, Abdul Qadeer and injured Ameer were sitting near house when armed riders shot and injured.

The body and injured were brought to CHK for autopsy and treatment, respectively.

Meanwhile, a man was gunned down in Lee Market area within the limits of Bhagdadi police station.

An official said Ali Hassan, 33, was returning home when armed pillion riders shot him dead.

Similarly, two bodies of tortured men were found from a garbage dumping point in Abbas Town, Abul Hasan Isphani Road.

The bodies were moved to ASH for postmortem. One of deceased was identified as 35-years-old Ismail. The identity of the other victim was yet to be ascertained.

A shot dead man was found from Eidgah Ground in Bin Qasim area.

Unidentified culprits first kidnapped 30-year old Hazrat Umer, and later shot him multiple bullets and threw the body in the ground.

Another decomposed body of a man was found from Lyari River within the vicinity of Sher Shah police station.

An official said that unidentified culprits first kidnapped the victim and penetrated single bullet in his forehead. He said that the body was at least 10 days old. It was shifted to CHK for an autopsy and later moved to a morgue.
