Three blasts on Chehlum routes kill four in Karachi

KARACHI: Despite strict security measures made on the occasion of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) on Tuesday, three explosions on the routes of processions in Orangi Town and the Brigade areas of Karachi claimed the lives of four people, while 30 others sustained injuries. Police claimed that the explosions were remote controlled.

On Tuesday morning, Chehlum processions were taken out from various parts of the city under tight security.The first explosion took place in the limits of Mominabad Police Station. Police said the explosion took place near the Azaakhana Kausar area after the blast and shifted the victims to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) with the help of rescue teams.

When more rescue and police teams were reaching the spot, another explosion took place outside a motorcycle showroom, which injured several people, including law enforcers, rescue workers and passers-by.

The ASH sources said that they received 25 blast victims, who were moved to the emergency ward and operation theatres. During treatment, four blast victims succumbed to their injuries.Two of those who lost their lives in these blasts were identified as Sunny and Irfan, while two others were still unidentified till the filing of this report. Two injured people were in critical condition.

The injured included a police Sub Inspector Muhammad Shafiq of Baldia Headquarters, three workers of Edhi Foundation identified as Wajahat, Shabbir and Shan, and three workers of Chippa identified as Ijaz, Saifur Rehman and Zafar.

A senior police official told that both the bombs were planted and were remote controlled. He said the first explosion took place near the Imambargah Azaakhana Kausar. The bomb was planted inside a potted plant.

According to the bomb disposal squad, two and three kg of explosive material was used in the first and second blasts, respectively. He said threats were received from banned outfits like the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

The third explosion took place at the main Chehlum procession route i.e. the MA Jinnah Road.The law enforcers, including Additional Inspector General Karachi Shahid Hayat, immediately reached there and cordoned off the area. Police said the bomb was planted inside a bag near the Bundoo Khan Hotel.

No damage was done in this blast as the procession was at the Nishter Park at that time. The procession was not allowed to proceed till the area was cleared by the BDS officials. About two kg of explosive material was used in that blast.Leaders of Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Fiqa-e-Jafariya condemned the three blasts in Karachi and demanded action against the perpetrators.

Correspondents/agencies add: The Chehlum processions were held peacefully in different parts of the country, including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore and other small and big cities.

QUETTA: Processions were taken out in the provincial capital. The major procession was taken out from the Punjabi Imambargah, Alamdar Road, that after marching on its stipulated routes including Alamdar Road, Toghi Road and Saraiay Namak culminated in Marriabad.

The second procession was taken out from the Imambargah Hazara Town.About 4,500 personnel of Frontier Corps and police were deployed for the security of the processions and another 1,000 personnel of law enforcement agencies were deployed on mountains for security duty.

GUJRANWALA: The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) was observed with religious harmony here. As many as eight mourning processions were taken out and six Majalis were held on the Chehlum. The district police had made tight security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident.

HAFIZABAD: Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) was observed here amid tight security. The district administration made foolproof security arrangements and the city was virtually sealed. All routes leading to the main Imambargah were sealed with barbed-wires. Walkthrough gates were also erected. No untoward incident was reported from any place of the district. The DPO and DCO supervised security arrangements and appreciated religious scholars and media for maintaining harmony.

LALAMUSA: On the occasion of Chehlum, all routes were sealed and the GT Road on both sides was blocked by the police. The main procession was taken out from Imambargah Qasr-e-Abu Talib on the Railway Road.

Majalis-e-Aza was held at the Imambargah. Mourners marched on the Railway Road and reached the GT Road and offered prayers at Milad Chowk. The procession ended at Jamia Masjid Ali on the Eidgah Road after passing through Main Bazaar, Urdu Bazaar and Gala Mondi.

MULTAN: The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) remained peaceful amid tight security here. At least, 2,000 policemen were posted at different locations along with processions while 700 volunteers also performed duty. The Elite Force personnel and reserve district policemen remained on high alert at the Police Lines.

Earlier, the main procession was taken out from Mohallah Jhik which, after passing through bazaars and streets, culminated at Chowk Ghanta Ghar. Later, the participants of the procession reached Astana Pir Lal Shah situated on the Kutchery Road. Police had sealed all streets and roads to avoid any untoward incident. As many as 31 Majalis were held and eight processions were taken out on the Chehlum in Multan.

NANKANA SAHIB: A procession was taken out by mourners which after passing through various roads concluded at the Baba Haidar Main Chowk.Another procession was taken out from the shrine of Baba Naulakh Hazrat. The district police had taken strict security measures to avoid any untoward incident.
