Thousands rally to express solidarity with Kashmiris

06 February, 2014

ISLAMABAD: The Kashmir Solidarity Day was observed on Wednesday across Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan with zeal and fervour.

Thousands of people expressed solidarity with the people of the Indian-held Kashmir and paid tribute to the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs. The day is a regular annual event being marked to support the indigenous freedom struggle of the people of Occupied Kashmir, their right to plebiscite and to condemn Indian aggression and its illegal occupation of the held valley.

A large number of organisations and political parties took out rallies in support of Kashmiris in Islamabad, Sialkot, Jhang, Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Karachi, Quetta, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Kohat, Vehari, Faisalabad and other places.

The day dawned with special prayers and one minute silence was observed at 10am. Rallies were staged in almost all cities and towns of AJK, including the capital city of Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Rawalakot, Kotli and Bhimber, which demanded cessation of Indian hostilities in the held Valley. Human chains were formed on all five bridges, including Mangla, Kohala, Dhalkot, Azad Pattan, Bhimbher, the points which connect AJK with Pakistan.

Thousands of people belonging to all walks of life gathered at the bridges to form human chains as a gesture of oneness and commitment to their brethren in Occupied Kashmir. The government and people of Pakistan had been observing the day each year since 1990 to express solidarity with Kashmiri brethren of Indian-occupied Kashmir who are struggling for their birthright to self-determination promised to them by the United Nations Security Council.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the elected Legislative Assembly and the Council held a joint session in Muzaffarabad, which was addressed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

End.
