The slaughter of education... By Shakeela
03 October, 2013
Merit is a unique concept in the education system. Education in itself is a great resource to create new avenues for development of human potential. If there is no value of merit, there will be psychological depression and mental illness. My name is Shakeela Shams Mahesar and I got the third position in the Board of Intermediate Secondary Education in the Humanities group of 2013 from Sukkur Board. This letter is to inform the readers that the results were announced on September 6, 2013 but still I have not received an official letter nor have I been informed by the Sukkur Board about my result. I belong to a village where there is no media outlet that can highlight my views or telecast any news about the position holders. If we see other provinces, especially Punjab, importance is always given to the best students. Position holders are given awards certificates and prizes also.
Keeping in view this kind of discrimination, the effect can be one of complete destruction and decay of the education system. It is true that we live in the winter of educational reforms but this sort of policy gives birth to anarchy and can easily pull down our education system in the province of Sindh. I read in newspapers recently of how top priority is given to girls' education and that all kinds of ceremonies are held to award certificates to high achiever female students. I am very happy to see that rural female students are being given a place of importance in the education system but I am very sad because nothing in the form of an award or certificate has come my way. Position holders must be encouraged. I appeal to the chief minister of Sindh and education minister to look into the matter and value the position holders who are losing all motivation and hope.
