The killing fields... By Air Cdre (r) Yaqoob

Karachi, the economic hub of Pakistan, is bleeding. The PPP provincial government displays the height of insensitivity by terming it just another law and order situation. The federal government has at last woken up to address the situation. The focus appears to be on employing police, Rangers and FC in a targeted operation.
It is basically the job of the police force to maintain law and order in the city. However, it is unfortunate that the city's police force is also highly politicised. The Rangers who have been in Karachi for years are reportedly also involved in activities that can be termed illegal. The SC had pointed out that all the political stakeholders in the city have militant wings which must be disbanded. This has not happened. Sectarian killing is another aspect of the situation. The TTP is also active in the city. In such a grim situation a surgical cleanup operation by the army, though difficult, may be the final option to bring Karachi back to normal. For that, political will is a pre-requisite.
