The harsh Muslim voice... By Masood

03 October, 2012

After the violent protests of the last few weeks against a blasphemous video, we need to recognise that our hysterical actions only succeed in working against us. Such protests may be beneficial for those few people who are more interested in petty politics rather than love for the Prophet (PBUH). However, they leave a very negative impression of the Muslim ummah, telling the world that we are inherently violent people. It is true that our weaknesses and shortcomings in an age of economic and technological development have led to enmasse frustration. One would expect that our leaders would use this frustration to fight the many evils that Muslim nations are facing — illiteracy, corruption, intolerance, insecurity and lawlessness. Unfortunately, it is the other way around where they divert the real issues to promote their politics.

What have Muslims actually achieved by protesting against Satanic Verses and Innocence of Muslims? Nothing, except for the fact that by their violent reactions they have enticed even unconcerned people across the globe to read and watch such blasphemous material.

In my opinion, most of the protestors were lured into participating in these violent acts because of their love for the Prophet (PBUH) but, by acting as the pawns of a few wicked politicians, they themselves promoted blasphemy due to their outrage. It is time for Muslims to come out of this cycle of violence and concentrate on education, their economies, tolerance and better governance. These are the real goals to be achieved and they cannot be reached by killing, looting and ransacking.
