Talking terror... By Naeem

While briefing the media the other day, the interior minister resolved to eliminate terrorism from the country. He also announced a joint intelligence directorate to coordinate the activities of all intelligence agencies. I feel that a joint intelligence directorate will be just another bureaucratic channel. Instead, a national level authority should be established under the prime minister (the Indian, British and American models can be followed). Pakistan's security issues need a holistic strategy that must carry out deeper analyses of the external and internal threat perceptions and suggest a national response.
An awareness drive against extremism is also urgently needed. To this end all madressahs should be registered and their heads/leaders be appointed by the government. The government must also seriously try and tackle the channels of funding and training to banned terrorist outfits – especially those coming from outside the country.
