Six killed in firing at PPP MNA's rally in Khairpur

08 October, 2012

SUKKUR: Six people were killed and 10 others injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a public gathering of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in Khairpur on Sunday.

MNA Dr Nafisa Shah, daughter of the Sindh chief minister, was scheduled to address the gathering in Sadoro village of Khairpur.

However, according to a handout from the Sindh Chief Minister's House, the firing happened before the arrival of Dr Shah at the venue. The killed and injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Khairpur. Several of the injured were taken to a private hospital in Sukkur.

The dead included a reporter of a private TV channel, Mushtaq Khan. A heavy contingent of police cordoned off the area immediately after the incident.

The PPP declared Monday a day of mourning over the deaths of workers killed in the rally. On the other hand, Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah has sought an immediate report from the provincial inspector general, and Sukkur commissioner and DIG.

End.
