ISLAMABAD: An identified man hurled a shoe at Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during an election rally in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
The shoe, however, did not hit him. Security forces promptly detained the shoe-thrower and took him to Alicebridge Police Station for questioning.
According to reports, the incident took place four minutes into Singh’s speech when a youth, sitting in the front row, hurled a shoe at the dais.
The youth was identified as Hitesh Chauhan, 21, a computer engineering student from Bapunagar area of the city.
Singh, meanwhile, asked authorities not to lodge a case against the youth.
Singh was in the city to address a rally of select audience, including Congress party workers, intellectuals and businessmen.
The Congress party called the incident a ‘cheap publicity stunt’, the Hindustan Times reported.
