Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi received a guard of honour presented by smartly turned-out personnel of the armed forces at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad on Thursday.

Following the guard of honour ceremony, Abbasi formally took charge as the chief executive of the country.

Abbasi was sworn in as prime minister of Pakistan on Tuesday after winning the election on the same day by bagging 221 votes in the National Assembly.

Addressing the lower house soon after his victory was announced, Prime Minister Abbasi had said: "I am grateful to you all, for following the democratic process — whether you voted for or against me."

"I am grateful to the people of Pakistan, and I am grateful to the 'people's prime minister', Nawaz Sharif," he continued. Abbasi on Wednesday said that the government's incoming cabinet would take oath in a couple of days.
