Senate body calls for end to unscheduled load shedding

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power on Friday asked the Water and Power Ministry's secretary to direct all power distribution companies (DISCOs) to end unscheduled power load shedding. The committee which met with Senator Zahid Khan in chair was briefed about pace of work on various ongoing projects, including Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project, Gomal Zam Dam, Kurram Tangi Dam and Dargai Hydropower Project. Briefing the committee, Neelum-Jhelum hydroelectric Project Director Gen (r) Zubair said that the 969MW project would complete by mid-2016 at an estimated cost of Rs 275 billion and would contribute Rs 45 billion annually to the national exchequer. WAPDA Chairman Shakeel Durrani apprised the committee that the project would recover its cost in five to six years and currently 1,100 Chinese workers were working on it. End.
