Saleem Shahzad murder commission submits report to Gilani

ISLAMABAD: The commission probing journalist Saleem Shahzad's murder on Tuesday submitted its report to the Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani. The commission finalised its report on Monday, which was signed by all its members. The proceedings of the commission continued from June 27, 2011, till January 9. Several meetings were held to confabulate on certain aspects in the course of inquiry. The commission called for evidence through public notice in media and interrogated a large number of witnesses and also invited suggestions from various personalities related to the subject. The terms of reference of the commission are to inquire into the background and circumstances of abduction and subsequent murder of Saleem Shahzad, to identify the culprits, to recommend measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents, to probe the matters of conduct, which are in derogation of Articles 4, 9, 17, 19 and 19A of the constitution. PFUJ President Pervaiz Shaukat said that the commission finalised its report in six months time after interviewing 41 individuals. He said the government has promised to take action against the culprits in accordance with the findings of the commission. The report also includes PFUJ's recommendations for journalists and financial assistance to Shahzad's family. End.
