PESHAWAR: Claiming responsibility for the suicide bombing on the house of Chaudhry Muhammad Aslam, the SSP of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Karachi, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said on Monday that the attack was aimed at taking revenge for the Taliban killed by the SSP.
Through a statement in English emailed to members of the media in Peshawar and elsewhere, TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan warned that friends and colleagues of Chaudhry Aslam including Fayyaz Khan, Raja Umar Khitab, Mazhar Mashwani, Khurram Waris and Farooq Awan would also be killed in future TTP attacks.
Describing the suicide bombing as a 'fidayeen' strike, the TTP spokesman claimed Chaudhry Aslam was also killed in the attack. The spokesman was wrong as Chaudhry Aslam survived the attack, appeared on television and spoke to the media. Refusing to be cowed down, he warned that he would teach such a lesson to the militants that they their coming generations would remember it. He also said he never thought the terrorists would attack his family members, including children in their sleep.
TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan in his statement also advised people not to go near government officers, particularly employees of the intelligence agencies, as they could become victims in attacks on these officials. "We feel extremely grief (sic) when innocent people become the victims of our attacks," the statement said.
Before Ihsanullah Ihsan, the TTP spokesman for its Darra Adamkhel area chapter, Muhammad, phoned reporters in Kohat and elsewhere to claim responsibility for the suicide bombing in Karachi. The TTP branch in the semi-tribal territory of Darra Adamkhel, which is located between Peshawar and Kohat, is one of the most active and aggressive among its chapters. It often claims responsibility for terrorist attacks in Peshawar, Kohat and other places.
Though a group identifying itself as al-Mukhtar also claimed responsibility for the Karachi suicide bombing on Monday, the claim by the TTP Darra Adamkhel chapter and the central TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan is considered more credible.
The TTP central spokesman and the one for the Darra Adamkhel chapter have in the past made conflicting claims also. In case of the recent attack on a school van in Matani area in Peshawar district, the TTP Darra Adamkhel chapter claimed responsibility for the assault, but TTP central spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan subsequently issued a denial and said his organisation did not target children, women and public places.
End.
