SHC orders protection to freewill marriage couple

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC), on a constitutional petition of a Karo-kari-labelled couple, issued notices on Saturday to the advocate-general of Sindh, a station house officer, a district police officer and other respondents and ordered the police to provide every possible protection to the couple. Samina and her husband Sajjad, residents of Shahpir, districT Shikarpur, contracted marriage on January 15, 2013, after she made a freewill agreement at a local court. Samina submitted that her family did not accept their marriage and they had been declared liable to be killed in the name of honour. She stated that her family had lodged an FIR of kidnapping against her husband in order to persecute them at the New Fojdari police station, Shikarpur. Citing home secretary, SSP Shikarpur, SHO Faujdari police station as respondents, they prayed to the court to direct the respondents to provide security to them and quash the FIR. Headed by Justice Irfan Sadaat Khan, the division bench directed investigation officer to record statement of couple and appear before it on next date of hearing with police papers. End.
