SCBA suspends VP for inviting CJP to dinner
12 December, 2013
LAHORE: The executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Wednesday suspended membership of its vice president, Rana Naeem Sarwar (VP), on the charge of hoisting a farewell dinner for the outgoing Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry (CJP).
Earlier, SCBA Secretary Asif Mahmood Cheema had issued a show-cause notice to Sarwar for inviting the outgoing CJP to a farewell dinner on behalf of the bar's executive body. The notice was issued on the grounds that the executive committee of the bar with majority of the members had already decided not to hold any farewell dinner/lunch for the outgoing CJP due to torture on lawyers in the Supreme Court building.
In reply to the notice, the VP on Wednesday appeared before the executive committee and defended that he had extended the invitation in his personal capacity and was not from the bar forum. The committee declined to accept that the CJP was also given a souvenir on behalf of the SCBA. The committee suspended basic membership of Sarwar and now he is no more the VP.
