SC questions release of Ajmal Pahari

ISLAMABAD: Hearing the case regarding non-implementation of Karachi target killing case's verdict, the Supreme Court (SC) has questioned the release of alleged target killer Ajmal Pahari.
The court asked Sindh Advocate General Fateh Muhammad Malik as to how Ajmal Pahari got freedom from jail.
In response, Fateh Muhammad said that it was not Sindh government but the Sindh High Court which released Ajmal Pahari.
Upon this, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, taking exception of the statement, said that "it was you (the provincial government) who actually did not furnish evidence in the court due to which such criminals get save passage".
The court also sought details of Pahari's case to determine who was actually responsible regarding his release.
Meanwhile, the court also directed Sindh Police to produce murderers of MQM MPA Manzar Imam within 24 hours.
"How can a common man expect justice from this system where police do not arrest culprits without Supreme Court's pressure?" the court said, citing Shahzaib murder case.
"We are directing you to arrest the murderers of MPA Manzar Imam in the similar way, as it was primary duty of police too," the chief justice told Sindh Police officials.
Sindh IGP Sindh Fayyaz Laghari and Additional Chief Secretary Waseem Ahmad were also present in the courtroom during the proceedings.
The court observed that only for two months normalcy could return in Karachi but after that government started violating the verdict and the situation has started worsening there again.
The CJP questioned as to how Wasim Ahmad, who had already served as FIA DG, was appointed additional chief secretary of Sindh in violation of SC's judgement and "mere on the basis of friendship".
Justice Chaudhry said that "now we will examine each and every case to examine whether our judgement is ignored or implemented in the Karachi law and order case".
The court adjourned the case until February 6 and it would hear the case at its Karachi Registry.
Meanwhile, Maulvi Iqbal Haider also filed a petition in the SC over the release of Ajmal Pahari and said his name should be put on ECL.
