KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Monday passed a resolution calling for the release of Professor Ajmal, Ali Haider Gilani and Shahbaz Taseer.
The resolution was presented by Sharmila Farooqi. Addressing the House, Sharmila said that the government was releasing Taliban prisoners but was quiet over the locals detained by the TTP. She said the Taliban were showing no flexibility on this matter. Sharmila asked rhetorically if Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was the interior minister of the Taliban or the government.
Opposition leader Faisal Sabzwari protested against the extrajudicial killings of MQM workers and demanded an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said the government will not allow discrimination against any party, including the MQM. He said that no law enforcement agency has been allowed to kill anyone extrajudicially.
Speaking on his turn MQM's Kamran Akhtar said the country was facing huge losses due to the smuggling of Iranian oil. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sikander said that the coastguard and custom officials were responsible for curbing smuggling.
Sindh Assembly member Khawaja Izharul Hassan termed the increase in bank dacoities as a major concern. Khawaja Izharul Hassan noted that robbers broke the lockers of a private bank at Nishtar Road and fled with the life earnings of the depositors. He said neither the government nor the bank took any action although the news of the burglary was aired on the media. He claimed that mostly security guards are involved in such kinds of crime.
Hassan inquired why no action is taken against private security company who recruit guards without any verification. The MQM MPA further stated that the provincial government and the bank should compensate the people who lost their earnings in the dacoity. However, Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said the Sindh government cannot compensate the people for their loss. He said that they will try to provide compensation through the banking laws.
Meanwhile, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Monday warned the government of opposition's reaction if it failed to secure the release of Ali Haider Gilani and Shahbaz Taseer. Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah issued the warning while talking to the media after an informal meeting.
Shah was responding to a query on the government's release of 32 Taliban prisoners during the last few days without any reciprocal move by the Taliban. Shah was of the view that the military should be taken into confidence regarding the release of prisoners.
