Relations with the US... By Sobia

Currently, a hot debate is going on in the media regarding the outcome of our prime minister's visit to the US. Every Pakistani is so concerned about what we will achieve by this visit. There are so many issues that we are facing today because, mainly, every issue is correlated with the US, whether we talk about the issue of drones, peace talks with the Taliban, the Afghanistan situation, relations with India, safety of our nukes and the dwindling economy. One cannot ignore the role of the US in world politics but it is directly affecting developing states like Pakistan. Since the inception of Pakistan, the government preferred the US in terms of bilateral relations and fully supported the US. Contrary to this, the US never reciprocated in an encouraging manner the efforts made by Pakistan.
At different times, the US has mostly left Pakistan in the lurch, which has always proved detrimental to our national interest, whether it is in the form of economic sanctions at different times when Pakistan refused to accept their terms and conditions or military strikes like continued drone strikes or the incident at the Salala check post. All these episodes play a negative role in bilateral relations among states. The main issue of drone strikes is creating more resentment among the public against the US. People have different opinions about the usage of drones — some are in favour of them because of their accuracy.
Undoubtedly, these drone strikes have increased terrorism in Pakistan. Neither the drones nor militants are doing any good to the commoners, as both are detrimental to the state's sovereignty and stability. The recent report by Amnesty International has serious concerns that these attacks violated the prohibition of the arbitrary deprivation of life and may constitute war crimes or extrajudicial executions. The report called for those responsible to stand trial. The country's economic conditions are also not good because of wrong policies, and corruption on a large scale has weakened our financial status. In all these circumstances, where the situation in Afghanistan is directly affecting our security situation, how one can rely on the US, which has intensified complications for Pakistan?
