ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it does not have enough yet evidence to arrest Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and 15 other accused in the rental power plants (RPPs) case.

NAB additional prosecutor general presented a progress report in the court on Thursday, which stated the NAB chairman as saying that "the investigation and inquiries are not yet complete." NAB Chairman Admiral Fasih Bukhari and Prosecutor General KK Agha have also contended that the Supreme Court is overstepping its jurisdiction because it cannot supervise the investigation.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry expressed dissatisfaction over the NAB report relating to the implementation of its March 30, 2012, judgement on awarding RPPs contracts to the companies it had rejected.

The NAB chairman was directed to submit a comprehensive list pertaining to the investigation in the cases of solicited and unsolicited contracts. The court had on January 15 directed that investigation reports be submitted to the authorities concerned and challans/references against the accused people be approved for their arrest. It had sought a report by January 17.

The NAB chairman said that he did not interfere in the investigation and had left it upon the investigative officers to probe the matter. Admiral Fasih said that the bureau had tasked different teams with recover the money. "Some money has been recovered, and residual amount against some companies is due."

The NAB chief told the court that before framing criminal charges against anyone they have to go through the different records and have to collect evidence to substantiate the allegations. He said that this process is going on. He said that two reports in respect of Piraghaib and Techno Sahuwal prepared under the supervision of the Rawalpindi NAB DG have to be tabled before the executive board meeting for a final decision.
