PESHAWAR: Iconic Pashtun leader and former Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmed was buried in his home district of Nowshera on Sunday after a big funeral in Peshawar, party leaders said.

Qazi, 74, died of cardiac arrest in Islamabad on Saturday. He was suffering from heart disease for some time and his condition became critical three days back. Party leaders, workers, activists, well-wishers and politicians attended the funeral on the Ring Road amidst moving scenes after his body was brought from Islamabad. After the prayers, his body was transported to his hometown of Baba Ziarat.

JI's provincial Information Advocate Secretary Israrullah said many party workers and supporters travelled from all over the country to attend the funeral. Qazi Hussain served the JI four times as president and was one of few party leaders with dynamic leadership skills. He stepped into politics as JI ameer of Peshawar district in 1970. Sixteen years later, he was elected member of Senate for six years and then again in 1992. However, he resigned from the Upper House of parliament as a "mark of protest" in 1996.

In 2002 elections, Qazi Hussain was elected member of the National Assembly from two constituencies in Nowshera district. Born on January 12, 1938, in Ziarat Kaka Sahib in Nowshera district, Qazi strongly opposed Pakistan's participation in the US-led war on terror. He was a prominent religious scholar, Islamic theologian and advocate of Islamic democracy. He narrowly escaped a suicide blast in November last year in the Mohmand Agency.

Qazi's funeral prayer was led by JI Ameer Syed Munawwar Hassan. Prominent among those in attendance were JUI-F Central Ameer Fazlur Rehman, Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) Chairman Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf President Javed Hashmi, JUI-F leader Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, JI leader Liaquat Baloch and other political leaders.

End.

I am shocked and grief stricken to learn of Qazi Hussain Ahmed's death and express profound sorrow and condolences for the family. He was very affectionate, soft spoken and kinds to all....May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace. He lived life fully, courageously and passionate, he was very intelligent and his mental faculties were very sharp till the very end.
It is not an appropriate word but he was my collegue in the National Assembly in 2002...There is so much to write....memories is all that we have...
