SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, the Indian police used brute force against protesters in Srinagar after at least 25 people were injured when a wooden bridge in the interior Dal Lake collapsed during a demonstration.

A group of people at Mir Behri locality of Saidakadal in Srinagar took to streets and staged a demonstration in support of their demand for proper roads after two minor siblings drowned two days back.

The protesters said that the siblings died, as they did not reach to the hospital on time due to bad roads and lack of connectivity in the interior areas of the Dal Lake.

The traffic on the road remained blocked for about two hours. As the protesters headed towards the interior Dal Lake on a wooden bridge all of a sudden a portion of the bridge collapsed and around 60 people fell into the Dal Lake.

The locals and rescuers jumped into the lake and rescued all of them. However, 25 of them sustained injuries. They were shifted to different hospitals. Five of the injured were stated to be serious.

Soon after the bridge collapse clashes erupted between the demonstrators and the police resulting in the injuring of five people. The police fired in air, lobbed tear smoke shells and used batons to break up the demonstrations.

On the other hand, the residents of Sedow area of Shopian gathered at District Office Shopian and held a sit-in protest against the use of brute force by the police against peaceful demonstrators. Several people including women and children were injured on Friday in police action against the demonstrators who were peacefully protesting against the anti-people policies of the puppet administration.

End.
