Promises and ignorance... By Shadman

The season of pledges and promises is about to arrive. The general elections are due. Election campaigns in Pakistan are invariably seasons of solemnly made promises that are rarely fulfilled, if ever. Still, people welcome each election, hoping that better times are ahead after the new government is formed — hope for the betterment of their lives, hope for a brighter future for our children. However, our politicians treat an election as another opportunity for enrichment, and find nothing wrong with deceiving people, going so far as to say that they are going to be servants of the electorate. Pakistan would be a completely different place if our politicians really fulfilled their pre-election promises to serve the country but, then, who even remembers promises our political leaders have made before they assumed power?
