President Zardari confirms 3 BHC, 5 LHC judges

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday confirmed three judges of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) and five of the Lahore High Court (LHC), while approved one-year extension for four additional judges of the LHC.

The judges confirmed for the BHC are Justice Abdul Qadir Mengal, Justice Naeem Akhter Afghan and Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar, while those confirmed for the LHC are Justice Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi, Justice Abdus Sattar Asghar, Justice Mehmood Maqbool Bajwa, Justice Ameenuddin Khan and Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti.

The four LHC judges who got one-year extension are Justice Muhammad Younas, Justice Iftikhar Hussain Shah, Justice Muhammad Kazim Raza Shamsi and Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed Khan.

A summary sent to the president by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that after due consideration by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan and later by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of Judges in the Superior Courts, the nominations were forwarded to the prime minister, who in turn advised the president to accord his approval to the nominations.

The president, acting upon the prime minister's advice, gave his approval today (Thursday). The nominations regarding the extensions were also forwarded by the prime minister to the president after due consideration by the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of Judges in the Superior Courts and the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, in accordance with the procedure laid down in the constitution.
