Politics over deadly drugs... By Saima
02 February, 2012
People are dying on a daily basis in Punjab due to spurious drugs but instead of taking care of the affected patients and bringing the culprits to book, the government and the opposition members in the provincial assembly have started a blame game over the issue. The other day, the Punjab law minister and the PPP deputy parliamentary leader even exchanged heated words and resorted to name-calling in the House, leading the opposition to boycott the session. The drama was created after the PPP leader demanded the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif over more than 100 deaths caused by the free contaminated drugs provided by the provincial government's health department at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC). Despite the attempts of the Deputy Speaker, both the leaders did not move an inch from their stance and the dust settled on the real issue. This is what happens every time an issue of serious nature is taken up in the assembly for a meaningful debate. Unfortunately, our so-called representatives are more sincere with their leaders than their electorates from where they are elected. They serve their leaders more than the masses. There is a lesson in this incident for our people to keep in mind before electing these politicians and others of their ilk again in the next elections. SAIMA FAWAD
