Polio worker assaulted in Landikotal

07 March, 2013

LANDIKOTAL: Unidentified armed men tortured a polio worker in Landikotal and warned him and others involved in the anti-polio campaign to quit the campaign or be ready to be killed.

Four armed men intercepted a polio team's worker, Adnan Shinwari, in Angoor Bagh area of Peero Khel on Wednesday.

They reportedly tortured the worker and snatched his vaccine kits, and gave him and all other polio workers the last warning to give up polio campaigns or be ready for consequences, Adnan Shinwari told media, describing the four armed persons who, he said, wore masks and were armed with daggers and automatic guns.

A polio worker said he and his colleagues cannot continue the polio eradication campaign in the present circumstances. He said the administration should provide extra security to polio workers otherwise it will not be possible for them to continue the campaign.

Landikotal Tehsildar Shakeel Burki has told media that extra security would be provided to the polio teams so that they could keep on with their job to eradicate poliovirus from the area.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that Assistant Political Agent Azmat Wazir rushed to assault site along with a Khasadar Force contingent. The KKF personnel launched a search operation in the area to trace out the attackers, sources said.

End.
