Police probe threats to Punjab governor

LAHORE: Following a letter of Governor Syed Ahmad Mahmood to the Inspector General of Police, Punjab, for action against extortionists, who had allegedly given him life threats, the police have started a probe. Unidentified people had sent a letter to the governor with threats to kill him for not paying them huge extortion. The staff of the governor brought the issue into the notice of the IGP and the Addl. IG Special Branch for actio. The IGP directed police toprobe the issue. DIG Operations, Rai Tahir, on the issue said that some persons had sent the letter to the governor with threats by writing names and cell numbers of his opponents. The DIG added that they had grilled the accused and it proved during interrogation that some people had attempted to implicate their opponents in a heinous crime. He also said action would be taken against the sender of the letter. When contacted, Punjab Governor Syed Ahmad Mehmood refused to comment on the issue. Efforts were also made to contact his spokesperson but he did not respond. End.
