Police arrest activists as parties claim innocence

KARACHI: Police rounded up several suspects, including political party activists, during a crackdown in the city on Thursday.
SSP City Tariq Dharijo said that several suspects were arrested during raids in Kharadar and Meethadar areas. He said that drugs and arms were also seized during the raids.
Police said that four people were arrested in Usmanabad area of Garden and weapons were also recovered from them.
According to reports, police also conducted raids in Shah Latif Town and Landhi, arresting three political activists. The police crackdown drew criticism from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) who said their workers were innocent.
The MQM said that its workers were targeted in various localities in the police raids. MQM leader Wasay Jalil said that two MQM unit in-charges and a joint unit in-charge have been arrested.
The ANP also condemned the police raids and claimed that its workers and office bearers were apprehended during raids in Quaidabad and other areas of the metropolis.
