Petition filed to stop Kalabagh Dam criticism
12 September, 2012
LAHORE: A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday requesting the court to issue directions to stop negative propaganda against construction of Kalabagh Dam and direct Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to raise the issue before the Council of Common Interests (CCI).
The petitioner, Barrister Bilal Ahmed, stated that construction of Kalabagh Dam was necessary to fulfil the energy needs of the country and that it was also vital for progress in the agricultural field. He said some elements, including political personalities, were spreading negative propaganda against the construction of the dam. He requested the court to issue directions for politicians not to issue any statements against the construction of the dam.
In an already pending petition before the court, LHC Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial had sought detailed report from the federal government about construction of the dam and its need and impact in connection with the energy crisis in the country. It is pertinent to mention that WAPDA has already supported the construction of this dam.
