LAHORE: The Provincial General Council of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) on Wednesday re-elected Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as its president and Chaudhry Zaheeruddin as secretary.

Both the leaders were elected unopposed, as no other party member challenged their leadership during the council's meeting held at the Muslim League House. Around 1,020 members of the Provincial General Council voted in favour of both the candidates to elect them once again.

The council has also authorised Pervaiz Elahi and Chaudhry Zaheeruddin to select the other office-bearers of the party to run the office properly. Therefore, the two leaders would hopefully nominate their team in a couple of weeks.

A PML-Q Punjab spokesman told our sources that the party's central leadership would be elected today (Thursday) in the party elections being held at the Islamabad office. Meanwhile, party sources told this scribe that the PML-Q's sitting president, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, and secretary, Mushahid Hussain, would be re-elected.

Ch Pervaiz Elahi is the deputy prime minister, as an ally of the ruling PPP government in the Centre, and has also served as the Punjab chief minister in General (r) Musharraf's tenure from 2002 to 2007. He had served as the speaker, opposition leader and the deputy opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly in the 90s.

Chaudhry Zaheeruddin is the sitting parliamentary leader of the PML-Q in the Punjab Assembly. Earlier, he served as the opposition leader of his party in the House. He hails from Faisalabad, and runs a transport business.

End.
