Penny-wise, pound foolish... By Tariq

There was a time when the state of Pakistan invested in running government schools, colleges and universities that produced scientists like Professor Abdus Salam, or philosophers and economists of repute, who helped develop the little infrastructure we have today. Schools and colleges like Central Model School Lahore, GC Lahore, DJ Science College Karachi etc were places where talented students who could not afford to get educated in private schools and colleges got admitted on merit. When the state shied from its obligation by not offering subsidised quality education, it deprived this country of valuable human resource.
Handing over education to the private sector has deprived this country of its valuable human assets. If only we had invested three to four percent of our GDP on education, a large majority of the poor forced to send their children to madressahs would have had the option of providing education to their children in state subsidised schools and colleges. Instead we have lost over $25 billion because of the militancy that has destroyed our economy, and our industry.
