Paying homage to our heroes... By Rauf

13 December, 2013

Recently, the Balochistan government renamed the Government Degree College Gwadar as Syed Hashmi Degree College. Syed Hashmi was a great poet, writer, researcher and scholar. He modernised Balochi poetry by giving it a new, contemporary direction. He set a milestone by writing the first Balochi novel, Nazok, and the first comprehensive Balochi dictionary, Syad Gunj.

He formed a social welfare organisation for the development of the people of Gwadar. In the 1940s, he taught the people of Gwadar under the organisation's umbrella, but Wali-a-Gwadar could not bear this and Syed Hashmi was arrested and then exiled. He went to Karachi and joined Radio Pakistan. He died in April 1978 in Karachi. The step taken by the government to pay homage to our hero is commendable.
