Pak`s defense policy in conformity with e prevailing geo-strategic environment: PM Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is a peaceful country and our defence policy is in conformity with the prevailing geo-strategic environment and measures up to our national aspirations, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said.
Talking to Mr. Aleksandar Szczygklo, Defence Minister of Poland who called on him here Monday, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan does not nurture aggressive designs against any country. However, peace is achieved through strength and our defence policy is designed to maintain minimum credible deterrence both in conventional and strategic areas to ensure peace and stability in the region and to safeguard the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
He said Pakistan, which is uniquely positioned at the confluence of three regions; Central, Western and South Asia is working for peace and playing a stabilizing role in a region full of challenges. Pakistan is desirous of promoting peace, the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan being one of the largest contributors in the UN peacekeeping system is contributing to global peace.
He said that Pakistan believes in self-reliance and has made progress in enhancing its indigenous capabilities in the area of defence and security. Pakistan, the Prime Minister said, has entered into joint ventures with many countries in the area of defence production.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan attaches great importance to its long-standing relations with Poland and wants to enhance and diversify bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
He said there is a vast potential of cooperation between Pakistan and Polandin the areas of trade, science and technology, education and culture and thetwo countries need to make efforts to explore new vistas of cooperation. The Prime Minister said we want to import more engineering goods and heavy machinery from Poland.
The Prime Minister said the recently concluded visit of President General Pervez Musharraf to Poland alongwith the Defence Minister of Pakistan, Rao Sikandar Iqbal laid the foundation for military and defence cooperation between the two countries.
The Prime Minister said the training institutions of our armed forces are known for excellence all over the world and Poland may benefit from them by sending their officers for training to these institutions.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan wants better access for its goods in the markets of European Union and is keen to finalize FTA with EU. He asked Poland to support Pakistan in this regard.
The regional and global issues also came under discussion. On Iraq the Prime Minister said that Pakistan strongly believes in Iraq`s sovereignty and territorial integrity and we are concerned over tragic events taking place there. The world has a responsibility to establish peace and stability in Iraq, the Prime Minister added.
On Afghanistan, the Prime Minister said Pakistan desires to see peace and stability in Afghanistan which is in the interest of Afghan people as well as in Pakistan`s interest.
Mr. Aleksandar Szczyglo, the Defence Minister of Poland appreciated the contribution made by Pakistan in the fight against terrorism. He said Pakistan is making valuable contribution in promoting regional peace and stability.
Mr. Aleksandar Szczyglo said Poland is keen to enhance bilateral cooperation with Pakistan in a host of areas and steps are being taken for concluding the MOU for cooperation between the two countries in the field of defence.
Mr. Aleksandar Szczyglo appreciated the economic development and high growth taking place in Pakistan and said Pakistan`s performance in the socio-economic fields is impressive.
The meeting was attended by Senior Federal Minister for Defence Rao Sikandar Iqbal, Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Ali Asjad Malhi, Secretary Defence and senior officials.
