Pakistan urges resolute action for a free Palestinian state at UN

28 January, 2012

UNITED NATIONS: Reaffirming its support to the Palestinian cause, Pakistan on Friday underscored the need for implementing relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions to pave the way for a sovereign state of Palestine, living side-by-side in peace with all its neighbours.

While participating in an open debate on the Middle East, Pakistan's Permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon, told the 15-member body that the council's words must be transformed into resolute actions.

He said that while deliberations continue endlessly in the Security Council, the Palestinians continue to suffer at the "cruel hands" of an occupational force.

He said Israeli settlement activity is illegal and is systematically reducing the space for establishing a viable Palestinian State.

Also, the ambassador pointed out that Islamic countries were so often the topic of discussion in the Security Council that they might eventually account for 70 percent of its work. He also posed the question of permanent seats for Islamic countries.

End.
