PPP meeting discusses early polls

ISLAMABAD: The top PPP leadership gathered at the Prime Minister House on Tuesday to discuss the government's strategy to bring in the 20th amendment and recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) for the new terms of engagement with the United States in the upcoming session of the National Assembly. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani chaired the meeting that was attended by Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khursheed Shah, Senator Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Raja PervezAshraf, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Nazar Muhammad Gondal. According to sources, the meeting discussed current political situation in the country, memogate scandal, upcoming Senate elections and proposal of next general elections by October, this year. Sources said it was decided to bring 20th amendment that relates to legalising the by-elections that were held after the passage of 18th amendment into upcoming session of the National Assembly that will be held in mid February. Sources said Syed Khursheed Shah briefed the meeting about the briefing of the Election Commission that was given to political parties. According to sources, different options for the next general elections were also discussed in the light of the briefing of Election Commission to the political parties regarding the voter lists. It was decided that the PPP core committee session would be held on the return of President Asif Ali Zardari from Myanmar in which strategy would be devised with regard to upcoming joint sitting of both the houses of the parliament. Sources said during the meeting, recent back channel contacts with the opposition parties except PML-N were also discussed. The PPP was satisfied with the back channel contacts with the opposition parties, who were on the same page with the PPP on the political situation of the country with reference to upcoming Senate elections.
