PPP district president shot dead in Banaras

KARACHI: A local office-bearer of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) was gunned down in Pirabad locality on Friday.

Police said that victim 50-year-old, Mujeebur Rehman, was on his way when unidentified armed assailants riding on motorbikes intercepted the vehicle near Banaras Chowk and resorted to indiscriminate firing. As a result, Rehman sustained multiple bullet wounds and succumbed to injuries on his way to hospital.

Pirabad police shifted the victim to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre but he succumbed to his injuries. His body was handed over to his heirs after completing medico-legal formalities.

The PPP office-bearer took part in last year's general elections from PS-96. Police called it an incident of 'target-killing', and further informed that he was a property dealer.

The motive behind the incident has not been ascertained yet, and further investigations are underway.

Separately, a torture-marked unidentified body of a man was found from Supper Highway within the limits of Gadap City police station.

Police while quoting initial investigation said that unidentified culprits kidnapped the victim from somewhere and later threw his body after torturing him to death. The body has been moved to the morgue for identification after completing medico legal formalities at the hospital.

Lyari 'gangster' killed in encounter: An alleged gangster was killed during encounter with law enforcers in Lyari locality on Friday.

As per details, the encounter took place when police and Rangers in a joint targeted operation raided a hideout in Nawlane area of Kalakot. When the law enforcers neared the hideout, gangsters resorted to firing, and one gangster was killed in retaliatory firing.

However, the remaining suspects managed to escape.

The deceased gangster was later identified as Akbar Baloch alias Dada. Police claimed to have recovered a Kalashnikov and hand grenade from his possession. According to SHO Shahjahan Baloch deceased gangster was wanted in 26 cases including target killings of policemen, extortion and kidnapping for ransom.

Police attacked on second consecutive day: A policeman and three people were injured when unknown culprits hurled a hand grenade at Civic Centre within the vicinity of Aziz Bhatti police station on Friday.

According to details, the incident took place when unknown assailants riding motorbikes threw a hand grenade at a police van and fled from the scene.

As a result policeman Kashif and two passersby Syed Salman and Taj Mohammad were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment, where doctors termed their condition out of danger.

Police have registered a case against unidentified culprits on behave of injured cop Kashif and initiated investigation.

CM seeks report from IG, AIG: Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has strongly condemned the killing of Mujeeb Khan, President of PPP City area PS-96 and taking strict notice of the incident sought an immediate report from Sindh Police Chief and Additional IG Karachi. The CM directed them to nab involved culprits immediately.

According to a handout issued here on Friday, Qaim also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the incidentwith the bereaved family.
