11 March, 2013
LAHORE: Pakistan People's Party-backed minority member in the Punjab Assembly Pervez Rafique has submitted his resignation in protest against the Badami Bagh tragedy, alleging that the provincial government of Shahbaz Sharif is responsible for Saturday's incident. Pervez Rafique was elected on one of the eight seats reserved for minorities in the Punjab Assembly from his political party, the PPP. He belongs to Faisalabad and is heading the minorities' wing of his party in Punjab. In the resignation from the provincial assembly seat, Rafique said, "We strongly condemn the Badami Bagh incident in which more than 180 houses of the Christian minority were burnt by religious extremists." He said the Badami Bagh Lahore incident is a sign of insecurity of Christians in Punjab and they have been at the mercy of local administration and government functionaries who, he claimed, are involved in this tragic incident. "We have witnessed a lot of attacks on Christian villages, churches and colonies during the government of Shahbaz Sharif, and the PML-N workers are the root cause of all these incidents," Rafique claimed. End.
