PML-Q to back PPP for sake of democracy: Shujaat

06 January, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat has said that his party would continue to cooperate with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) for strengthening the democratic process in the country.

This commitment came at the meeting between Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and PML-Q leaders Ch Shujaat and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at the PM House on Thursday.

The leadership of both the coalition partners exchanged views on the current political situation of the country and expressed their unwavering commitment to continue strengthening democracy.

Mobilisation: The leaders also reiterated their resolve to mobilise public opinion through their respective platforms to stand up against those contemplating to thwart the democratic evolution in Pakistan.

The prime minister thanked Ch Shujaat, Ch Pervaiz Elahi, Sheikh Waqas Akram and Ahmad Yar Hiraj for their continuous support to the government.

No military courts: PM Gilani said that it was heartening that the political leadership, civil society and the media had criticised the idea of reintroducing military courts as the only option to control heinous crime.

"Military courts are alien in a democracy and where an independent judiciary is working within the ambit of the constitution," he said.

The PM said Pakistan is a civilised country, and voicing the idea of military courts by an important leader was regrettable. He said the idea was unacceptable to the people of Pakistan.

Ch Shujaat and Ch Pervaiz Elahi also called on President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency last night and discussed the overall political situation and coalition matters with him.

End.
