WASHINGTON: The US Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden has finally been identified – the al-Qaeda leader killer has come forward to reveal his himself.

On May 2, 2011, SEAL Team Six member Rob O'Neill, along with nearly two dozen other men, raided Osama's compound in Abbottabad, found the al-Qaeda leader and 9/11 mastermind hiding in a bedroom, pushed aside two of his wives, and shot him dead.

"Rob O'Neill is reportedly one of the most distinguished members of the Navy SEALs and was personally congratulated after killing Osama with three shots to his forehead, according to O'Neill. The daring night-time raid saw a team of Navy SEALs in Blackhawk helicopters swooping on the hideout. There were no casualties among US forces, who killed Osama and four others at the compound."

O'Neill is due to be named in an upcoming Fox News interview, providing details as to the raid and why he is now choosing to give up his anonymity. Reports suggest that O'Neill may be struggling financially. O'Neill's father spoke to the Daily Mail and with Rob's permission, identified his son as the long unknown shooter who brought Osama down, a decision that the Daily Mail says has caused fury at the Pentagon.

The 38-year-old O'Neill, a highly decorated military veteran, quit after 16 years in the armed forces. His father, Tom O'Neill, spoke about the safety of their family in light of his son's decision to name himself. "People are asking if we are worried that Islamic State will come and get us because Rob is going public. I say I'll paint a big target on my front door and say come and get us. My ex-wife gave birth to a man. We shouldn't be cowering in fear," Tom said.

Tom O'Neill spoke about his son's influence to join the Navy. "We were going hunting and a friend asked us to take a guy who was a Navy SEAL with us," the 65-year-old O'Neill said. "We were expecting someone who was 6 feet 8 inch who could lift a house with his bare hands, but he was this normal guy. And Rob said if this guy could be a SEAL, then so could he."

End.
