ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary leaders of the opposition parties are set to meet in Islamabad on Monday (today) to review the government’s response over their proposed terms of references (ToRs) for an inquiry into Panama leaks.

According to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the meeting will take place in opposition leader Khursheed Shah’s chamber at 3pm and will be attended by the parliamentary leaders of PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and other parties. He said that the opposition parties will devise their next strategy over the ToRs at the meeting.

Coalition partners of the government at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had on Saturday rejected opposition’s proposed ToRs. “Opposition has given one-sided decision, not ToRs of the commission,” the prime minister had told the meeting.

The meeting endorsed government’s decision of engaging the opposition parties in negotiations to discuss with them lacunae in their ToRs. The meeting decided to constitute a committee comprising members from the government as well as the coalition partners to sit with the opposition parties to find out some mutually acceptable way forward.

Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah on Sunday said that the opposition parties were willing to negotiate with the government over the ToRs proposed by them. He said that he always favoured negotiations in regards to the investigation of the matter.

Speaking to journalists after inaugurating the CT scan section at the Civil Hospital in Sukkur, Shah said that so far nobody from the government side had approached the opposition. Shah said parliament was the constituency of the prime minster, “and if he wants to avoid it, it’s his own will.”

The opposition leader said that the government was talking about leveling accusations whereas the opposition parties had not made the ToRs without any purpose. He said that it would be great if Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif does not shy away from investigation into the matter, adding that politicians should not be afraid of such issues. Khurshid Shah said that if the prime minister was willing to face the nation, there can’t be anything nicer than it. He said that investigation should be carried out against all those named in the Panama leaks.
