'No harm' in writing letter to Swiss authorities
18 January, 2012
LAHORE: The ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has reached a consensus on writing a letter to the Swiss authorities as its legal advisers have assured the party that the president has immunity and "foreign countries will, therefore, also endorse this constitutional privilege".
Sources in the PPP told our sources on Wednesday that party leaders had differences of opinion on the issue but they reached the consensus during meetings, which they held in the wake of a contempt of court notice served on the prime minister.
On the advice of party's legal experts, the central leadership has been convinced to implement the Supreme Court's direction if it orders the government to write a letter.
Earlier, PPP leaders Rehman Malik and Babar Awan were not in favour of writing a letter, but Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Aitzaz Ahsan said there was no harm in doing so.
End.
