Nisar for early Pakistan-EU Free Trade Agreement

06 June, 2012

ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday called for an early Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Pakistan, saying it would not only provide greater market access for Pakistani products, but also encourage the urgently needed investment in the country.

He said this during a meeting with European foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who called on him in Islamabad. PML-N leader Ishaq Dar was also present on the occasion.

Nisar spoke of the importance of Pakistan's relations with the EU, which he said was not only the most successful regional economic organisation, but also an influential player in global politics.

The EU was Pakistan's largest trading partner, accounting for about 30 percent of the country's exports, he said.

Briefing the EU foreign policy chief about an unprecedented energy and power crisis in the country, Ishaq Dar urged the EU countries to invest in the energy sector.

The PML-N leaders also lauded the EU's strong support to the country's democratic institutions, recalling with appreciation the role the EU observers had played in the earlier elections.

End.
