ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday expressed a lack of confidence in the current mechanisms in place to control terror financing in the country and said that the required objectives under the existing financial monitoring unit and SBP cannot be achieved.
The interior minister directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to devise a new strategy for tackling terror financing and to work closely with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and other financial institutions.
He said that it was the responsibility of the FIA to take swift action over any dubious local or foreign transactions.
The interior minister was chairing a high-level meeting to review the progress made in regards to dismantling the terror-financing networks.
Nisar also directed the FIA to launch an immediate crackdown, with the aid of Rangers and police, on human-smuggling networks operating in the country and visa agents who illegally send people abroad.
The minister also asked the concerned authorities to keep a strong check on illegal human movement across the Pak-Afghan border.
Nisar directed the authorities to produce quick results, and said he wanted results in months and not years. A new strategy should be worked out within next few days that should also include provincial governments, intelligence agencies and FBR, he added.
He said the strategy should be formulated keeping in view the information available regarding financial sources of the terrorists, modes of transfer, facilitators and statistics available with the provinces.
