NADRA told to resolve third gender's registration issue

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the NADRA chairman to resolve the issue regarding registration of people belonging to the third gender. A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, also ordered him to make sure that 'fake' transvestites were not registered. The chief justice said that third-gender people should be provided job opportunities and their services could be hired in contract employments, like polio campaigns. The counsel for the third-gender people informed the court regarding the problems faced by them in obtaining Computerised National Identification Cards (CNICs). The court was informed that some third-gender people wanted their gurus' names to be mentioned in the column of guardian, but NADRA had rejected their pleas. Upon this, the court directed the NADRA chairman to resolve this matter according to rules. All provinces submitted their reports about efforts made for the welfare of third-gender community. It was told that the Balochistan government had started registering transvestites, and was ready to provide them jobs in the Income Tax Department with a salary of Rs 10,000. End.
