Musharraf files contempt petition against Nawaz

02 January, 2014

ISLAMABAD: Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday moved a contempt of court application against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif before the special court, saying the premier's statement in a sub judice matter is tantamount to interference in the authority of the court.

Musharraf filed the application through his counsels during the hearing of the treason case, requesting the special court to summon the prime minister, who had given a press statement in the matter related to the high treason case.

Appearing before a three-judge bench headed by Justice Faisal Arab, Musharraf's legal team, which comprises of Dr Khalid Ranjha, Anwar Mansoor Khan, Ahmad Raza Kasuri, Raja Ibrahim Satti, Muhammad Ali Saif, Rana Ijaz Ahmad Khan, Chaudhry Faisal Hussain and Aftab Masood submitted the contempt application.

Referring to the press statement of Prime Minister Nawaz, issued on Tuesday, in which he said that the apex court's judgement of July 31, 2009 was sufficient evidence against Musharraf for punishment in the current matter, counsels for the former military ruler termed it as interference in the authority of the court. The Supreme Court had on July 31, 2009 declared November 3, 2007 emergency and PCO imposition by Pervez Musharraf as unconstitutional.

Musharraf has contended that the statement issued by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif amounts to interference in the authority of the court, tends to prejudice the case of respondent/applicant and amounts to creation of obstruction in the proceedings.
