KARACHI: The funeral prayers of slain employees of a private TV channel and Mufti Yar Mohammad along with his security guard and driver were offered separately on Saturday.

The funeral prayers of three employees of a private channel were offered separately, who were gunned down on Friday near Matric Board Office in Nazimabad.

The funeral of van driver Mohammad Khalid, 25, was held near his house in Bacha Khan area of Baldia and he was later buried at a local graveyard. Among survivors include wife and three children.

Separately, guard Ashraf's funeral was offered after Zuhr prayers held at the Korangi Crossing and was laid to rest at Korangi graveyard. Ashraf got married just 3 months ago.

The funeral of technician Waqas Aziz Khan, 31, was held at Nishter Abad Eid Gah and was later buried at Pak Colony graveyard. He was unmarried and the eldest of two siblings.

"We are investigating the case, and looking into the previous attacks on the same TV channel, said DIG West Jawaid Alam Odho. "We have found some clues while the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has accepted the responsibility for the attack. We are probing from different angles."

A senior police officer of district Central said the group, which killed cops from district East and West and two traffic policemen in Yousuf Plaza, was behind the attack, too.

On the other hand, a protest demonstration was staged by the journalist fraternity in front of the Karachi Press Club against Friday's deadly attack on employees of private TV channel.

Many journalists, as well as politicians attended the demonstration. Addressing the demonstrators, PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi demanded the government to find an effective solution to eliminate terrorism from the country. "Attacking journalists is a cowardly act," he said.

On this occasion, PPP Karachi chapter chief Qadir Patel demanded the government to announce a clear policy to deal with extremists. Terming the attack as assault on freedom of expression, MQM leader Wasay Jalil said the MQM always believed in free journalism. He called on the government to provide security to journalists.

It is worth mentioning that eleven journalists were killed in 2013, according to a report released by the Media Monitoring Cell of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE).

Separately, JUI-S' Sindh chapter Secretary General Mufti Usman Yar Khan, along with his security guard and a driver, was gunned down while returning home in Gulistan-e-Jauhar after attending a seminar in Saddar, when assailants targeted and killed him along with security guard and driver, on the spot.

The funeral prayer of Mufti Mohammad and his security guard were offered outside the Dar-ul-Khari of which he was the vice-principal. JUI-S chief, Maulana Samiul Haq lead the funeral prayers after Zuhr prayers at Madressah Abul Kahir and they were later laid to rest at Gulistan-e-Jauhar graveyard.

Police investigators have lost a major clue that could help the investigator to probe the targeted attack on the leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Samiul Haq. Though the investigators claimed there were some developments into the case; police sources privy to the matter told there was no breakthrough. "No footage was recorded on the government's CCTV cameras installed at Shara-e-Faisal," said the source. "The CCTV cameras installed near the crime scene - Memon Society - was out of order while we have also checked the CCTV cameras installed at the shops and bungalows but couldn't find any clue."

District East SSP Pir Mohammad Shah confirmed that the footages at the government's CCTV cameras installed on Shahrah-e-Faisal could not be recorded due to the technical problem; however, SSP Shah claimed there were some developments into the case but could not be shared with the media.

During the funeral occasion, the angry protesters resorted indiscriminate firing and staged protest near Safari Park and Sohrab Goth. They also pelted stones on the vehicles and set burnt tyres that blocked the main artery, shouted slogans against the incident and demanded the arrest of the culprits. Routine and commercial activities, especially in Gulistan-e-Jauhar remained suspended at the funeral and funeral occasion.

"An international conspiracy is being hatched to erupt sectarian violence in the country and to stop the negotiations with the Taliban," said JUI-S Ameer for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Maulana Yousuf Shah. "The government is not taking the matter seriously but still despite all this, we will move towards the negotiations with the Taliban as we have no more options left." No case has been registered as the police officials are waiting for the complainant to file one.

End.
