LAHORE/RAWALPINDI: The execution of death sentences of four convicted terrorists in Kot Lakhpat prison of Lahore was delayed on Saturday amid security concerns. The pending death sentences in Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi were also deferred.
The prisoners on death row would be transferred to other jails. According to sources, terrorists involved in attacks on Gujrat Army Camp and intelligence agencies in Multan are likely to be hanged on either coming Monday or Tuesday. Ten terror convicts on death row are housed in both Lahore and Faisalabad jails. After amendments in the prison laws, the inmates do not necessarily have to be executed at the time of Fajar prayers.
According to sources in Adiala prison, the death sentences have been delayed until security clearance is granted. DIG Prisons Shahid Saleem said that the jail authorities had not been given directions regarding the execution of terrorists; therefore, in order to proceed with the executions, they were awaiting court orders.
Meanwhile, a condemned prisoner who was to be hanged on Tuesday died of heart attack in a jail in Sukkur.
According to police, prisoner Nazim hailing from Jacobabad district was a patient of blood pressure.
On the other hand, security has been tightened at the Central Jail Mach. There are 97 condemned prisoners lodged at this jail waiting for their execution. Twelve applications for mercy are under consideration of the president, while cases of others were being heard by the Supreme Court and high courts.
