Mohmand Agency cleared of militants: IG Ghayoor
17 August, 2013
PESHAWAR: Frontier Corps Inspector General Major General Ghayoor Mehmood has said that the government's writ has been restored in Mohmand Agency after successful operations against militants in their strongholds.
Talking to reporters after inaugurating Yadgar-e-Shahuda (Martyr's Monument) of Mohmand Rifles at Ghalanai, headquarters of Mohmand Agency, he said that security forces lost 270 valiant troops while fighting militancy.
Earlier, addressing a jirga (tribal assembly) of Mohmand tribesmen, the FC IG said that 170 paramilitary troops of Mohmand Rifles and 100 soldiers of the army also died in the line of duty and inflicted heavy losses to militants and anti-state elements.
He said that the sacrifices of security forces and tribesmen had paved the way for complete restoration of the government's writ in Mohmand Agency, bordering Afghanistan.
"The terrorists have been flushed out of their bastions and the agency is now under the control of the political administration."
Maj Gen Ghayoor Mehmood said militants, at the behest of their foreign masters, had challenged the writ of the government in the agency in the past and inflicted losses to tribesmen. However, he said, the security forces – with the support and collaboration of "the brave tribal people" – succeeded in flushing the militants out of their hideouts.
He expressed the confidence that Mohmand tribesmen would continue to support the endeavours of the government for the restoration of peace in the agency, and would not allow anti-state elements strengthen their roots in the future.
He urged the tribesmen to keep vigilance in their respective areas and inform security forces upon seeing any suspected element in order to ensure prompt action. He urged the displaced people of Mohmand Agency to return to their homes without any fear, and added that the government would ensure full protection to them.
The FC IG said the Mohmand Agency had a vast potential in the marble and mining sectors, which, if properly explored, could help improve the local economy.
He commended the sacrifices of Mohmand Rifles during the law enforcement operations against anti-state elements in different parts of the tribal region and held their sacrifices in high esteem. Mohmand Agency Political Agent Khushal Khan, Mohmand Rifles commandant and others senior civil and military officials were present on the occasion.
