This refers to your September 21 report that Chief of Army Staff Gen Kayani snubbed calls, by some commanders during the last corps commanders meeting, for an army takeover. Every Pakistani can relate to the anxiety and concerns expressed by the commanders participating in the conference. No doubt the country is on the verge of a complete collapse, and therefore, needs a change of guards. But, a military takeover under Gen Kayani would be neither desirable nor acceptable. In this context, I welcome Gen Kayani's ‘snub' and take it as a good omen.
The present situation is ideal for a change which can be brought about jointly by the army and the judiciary in the form of a technocratic caretaker dispensation without going for the option of imposing martial law.
