Measles resurfaces... By Daniah
24 January, 2013
The deadly measles virus that caused havoc in Sindh recently, ravaging infants and young children, has made its way to North Waziristan. According to reports, four children have died and another 20 have been infected by the virus in just a week's time. This should serve as a cause for alarm because, in Sindh, measles reached epidemic proportions. If steps are not taken immediately, we might see a rehash of what happened in Sindh happen in the Agency. I am appalled that the health authorities are not taking bigger note of the issue and are not working on policies and a plan to effectively target the virus with speedy immunisation drives and public awareness campaigns. What needs to be done on a war footing is dealing with the many ailments that are inflicting people, especially children, across the length and breadth of the land. Just because the majority of the victims are poor and downtrodden does not make them any less important. This matter must be looked into urgently. DANIAH SHAH
